Gem Lightbox is inferior to FlashBox

Find out why made in USA FlashBox is
irrefutably superior in every way to made in China Gem Lightbox

Interior work space

FlashBox: 10" wide, 12" Deep, 10" high

Gem Lightbox: 6 ¾" wide X 7 ⅞" deep, they don't tell height, but we estimate from exterior height and interior component allowances that it is no more than 4" open space between floor and ceiling... bottom line fact is that this tiny thing is completely impractical for photographing jewelry.

FlashBox is a lot bigger so that you can work with all but the most huge jewelry pieces.
FlashBox will not cramp your style or get in your way.

Exterior Dimensions

FlashBox: 10" wide, 17 ¼" length, 12 ¼" high: perfectly sized for any desktop.

Gem Lightbox: 7 7/8" wide, 11 13/16" length, 8 11/16" high: ridiculously small for intended use.

Turntable Dimensions

FlashBox: 10" diameter because we know from 25+ years of professional studio hands-on experience that a 10" diameter turntable is the minimum for real world practicality.

Gem Lightbox: 6 ⅝" diameter is so ridiculously small that it's insulting.

Accessibility to Interior Stage

FlashBox: 10" x 10" opening on both left and right sides makes it easy to use both hands to manipulate ideal composition/positioning of your jewelry. And you never have to move the camera out of the way for access to place, position, and remove pieces.
By design "User Friendly" is built-into FlashBox to conquer the real world demands of Jewelry photography.

Gem Lightbox: You must first move the camera out of the way, then remove the front door, then try to work within the tiny space of less than 6" wide opening which is likely an impossible challenge to use both hands here, and since you cannot look through the camera while composing your jewelry you must then replace the front door, reposition and frame the camera all over again, and then what if you don't like how the piece is set... well, now you have to do it all over again. Does that sound like fun to you? Does that sound like an efficient way to get your work done?
Gem Lightbox is such a clunky cumbersome obstructive design that it makes no sense at all.

Lighting

FlashBox:

  • Photography means paint with light.
  • No matter how much your camera cost it can only record what you show it, good or bad lighting, it can only give you what you give it.
  • Fixing poorly lit image/videos quickly and greatly corrupts the image quality.
  • PhotoCubics does not want our customers to suffer such rude inconsiderations.
  • FlashBox lighting is configured to give you high quality images right out of the camera without cranking up the camera to image destructive settings.
  • FlashBox eliminates having to fix images because FlashBox gets the job done right - right out of the camera - that's true professional photography.
  • We do not offer image and video editing services because the whole point of FlashBox is that it is true DIY professional jewelry photography,
  • FlashBox images do not need fixing.

Gem Lightbox:

  • Gem Lightbox lighting is absurdly underpowered to do the job even half right.
  • If you know what to look for it is easy to see in their demo videos and in their images that they must crank up camera brightness/ISO settings to image destructive levels to achieve an almost white background at the expense of losing edge details of the jewelry.
  • And then they still must tweak it more in editing... further corrupting image quality.
  • But hey, they are there for you with $5.00 per image editing service; as if that makes them the good guys.
  • It appears obvious that the Gem Lightbox people know that the images one gets from their contraption must be repaired/retouched.
  • It then logically follows that the real money for them is in turning you into an ongoing repeat image retouching client.
  • Gem Lightbox raises a lot of eyebrows.

Software

FlashBox:

  • We're not a software company, and we're not at all interested in lying to say how software is the magic for quality images... it is not and never will be because it always starts with and ends with light, not software.
  • That said, we recommend what we think is the best App for Smartphone photography/video capture and editing: ProCam 8, priced at only $8.00

Gem Lightbox:

  • They brag a lot about the wonders of their software, they do not brag about the quality of their lighting.
  • Their software has no real camera controls and very limited editing capabilities.
  • They boast about one click uploading to social media, but you can do that through your photo library app just as easily if not better.
  • They tell you that it is magically effortless... and it is if poor quality images satisfy you, in other words, a fairytale that is too good to be true.
  • The apparent glaring contradiction or bait and switch, they want you to become an ongoing repeat client for $5.00 per image retouching.
